Originally called the Survival Game, paintball began as a recreational
game played in the woods, using agricultural paint guns designed to
tag faraway trees and cattle.
Since the first paintball game in 1981, paintball equipment has advanced,
associations have formed, and there is even a World Championship of
paintball. There are rules, regulations, safety precautions, and game
variations.
Game types include woodsball, speedball, tournament, stock class, and
reball (or T-ball).
Woodsball – played in the woods like the original Survival Game,
woodsball involves usually acres of playing field, larger teams, and
games longer in duration. Trees, bushes, logs, etc. all form a challenging
and unpredictable terrain that holds allure for many paintballers.
Speedball – by contrast, speedball takes place on a field about
half the size of a football field. Because of the smaller field-size,
the teams are smaller, terrain and obstacles are artificial, and games
don’t last as long. Stealth has very little to do with a game
of speedball. This format is commonly used for tournament play.
Tournament – this is organized competition, sanctioned by associations,
and governed by rules and regulations that ensure fair play and safety.
Tournament play can take the form of woodsball or speedball, though
speedball is easier to regulate and supervise.
A paintball game, regardless of field of play, has three main game
variations: capture the flag, king of the hill, and elimination. In
capture the flag, the object is to penetrate the other team’s
territory and steal their flag. King of the hill involves staking claim
and defending a certain area of the field until time expires. Eliminate
is simply eliminating all players on the other team.
Paintball is a rousing game that many different ages and kinds of people
play and enjoy. Paintball equipment can be rented or purchased. Paintball
masks are required safety equipment, but the only other things needed
are a marker (gun) and paintballs.
